Designing a Piece of History

The Magna Carta Anniversary Playing Card Set, designed by Alexander Chin, is a stunning tribute to the iconic document that shaped the course of history. The design concept focuses on the theme of tension between Royals and Rebels, with a black and white deck series that captures the essence of the era.

The packaging itself is an integral part of the design, transforming the collector's playing card industry by redefining the function of "PLAYING" to "DISPLAYING." The interactive package design system allows for multiple display options, giving collectors the opportunity to showcase their cards in unique and personalized ways.

The packaging features pleated linen embossing, reminiscent of knight uniforms from the time of the Magna Carta. It also includes partial reveals of family crests and illustrations based on real people, creating a larger story that unfolds as users interact with the product.

One of the standout features of the design is the inclusion of Jokers that feature authentic illustrations of the King's seal inside. This attention to detail adds an extra layer of authenticity and historical significance to the playing cards.

The realization of the design involved a meticulous process. Concept illustrations were initially sketched in pencil, followed by layering vellum for additional detail and inking. The images were then scanned and vectorized in Illustrator, with additional polishing and gradients added in Photoshop. The final designs were submitted to The US Playing Card Co for printing.
